Hands on Learning

Hawk and Lily Farm and Field School is excited to be offering its first round of classes the fall of 2025. All classes will take place on the farm and will include a combination of lecture and hands-on learning. Our class size will be limited in order to facilitate more connection between participants. Camping on the property is available for a limited number of participants who book two back to back workshops.

Who can attend?

Classes are open to people of all ages, though unless noted, the content will be geared towards adults.

Location

All classes will meet at our farm site located 20 minutes outside Nevada City. Participants must pre-register for classes after which they will receive the class details and directions to the farm. Parking is limited so please carpool whenever possible.

What do I bring?

Please be prepared for a long day outside with water bottles, shade hat, lightweight layers for sun protection, and lunch. Snacks and water will be provided. Bring a journal or notebook.

A great way for us to get to know our community and gather together to work on projects around the farm. Participants must pre-register so we can get a head count and plan our projects. Refreshments, tools and fun provided. Volunteer days will be every 3rd Friday of every month. The next volunteer day will be Friday, September 19.

In this half day class we will do a deep dive into greenhouse management, growing plants of all kinds from seed and how to propagate plants vegetatively. We will have the opportunity to do some hands on work taking cuttings and divisions of some plants from the gardens as well as doing some seeding. Participants will be able to take home some divisions of their choice.

In this class we will learn about the process of planning, designing and planting your cut flower garden in the space that you have. We will discuss site selection, different groups of cut flowers, varietal considerations as well as growing conditions for each. Participants will leave with a flower garden starter kit including plants and seeds. Lunch is provided.

In this class Angie will discuss her approach to garden based floral design. We will have an extensive farm tour followed by a group gathering mission to cut all of the materials for our arrangements. She will then demonstrate her process in designing two different styles of arrangements (a low centerpiece and a large focal arrangement). Lastly participants will be assisted in building two of their own arrangements which they can take home with them.

This half-day advanced floral design class will discuss the mechanics of floral installations, including site considerations, tools, tips, and techniques. We will spend time gathering materials on the farm and then work to build all three kinds of installations together. Refreshments will be provided.
